I've seen many people use Midjourney to generate beautiful digital art ever since text-to-image AI models became popular. The art can be really good with the right prompt, and people usually can't tell that it's AI generated when you give the model the right instructions.
I feel the need to mention that I'm in no way claiming to be an AI artist. However, I know I can teach you valuable information you can use to make digital art in Midjourney. You can use the newfound knowledge and combine it with your creativity to create stunning art.
Midjourney has made art creation possible for people who never before considered themselves visual artists.
I have always been awful at drawing and painting. I express my creativity through words. Since I use natural language to interact with Midjourney, one of my favorite things to do in my spare time these past few months has been to use words to produce digital art.
How to Write Midjourney Prompts for Digital Art?
Creating good digital art in Midjourney is possible only if you write concise prompts that perfectly describe what you want to see. Remember that the generated output is a reflection of your instructions.
You need to find the right words to use in a prompt if you want to make art that will stand out. Proper terminology makes all the difference. The first thing that you should do is become familiar with some of the most popular art styles today.
I've written an entire article on some of the best art styles for Midjourney. The article about art styles is an excellent overture to the text you're reading right now. The type of prompt you should write when you're making digital art in Midjourney varies heavily depending on the style.
If you want to make something abstract, your prompts should be abstract as well. In case you want to create an image that revolves around a particular object or scene, you should do your best to describe it in full detail.
Midjourney Prompts for Different Art Styles
In this section of the article, I'll get right to the good stuff. I'm going to show you multiple examples of Midjourney prompts for art I've written and that I think are pretty good.
I want you to use these prompts as inspiration to find out how you'll express your creativity through words. It will most likely take some time before you become good at writing prompts that are longer than several words, but it will be a fun learning experience.
If you don't feel confident enough to write your own prompts in the beginning, I suggest changing certain parts of my prompts to see how that will affect the generated images.
Midjourney Prompts for Abstract Art
The thing I love to do in Midjourney the most is make abstract art. I don't usually share the results, as it's a personal and relaxing activity that helps me unwind. But given the topic of today's article, I have to share some Midjourney prompts for abstract art.
I think that you get the best abstract art from Midjourney when you write prompts that almost make no sense. The prompt is abstract in itself. I'll show you what I mean in the following examples.
/imagine abstract painting showcasing a surreal exploration of abstract depths, where paradoxical shapes and enigmatic forms merge in an intoxicating mosaic, inviting the viewer to immerse themselves in the mysteries of the unknown --ar 16:9 --v 5
This is one of my favorite abstract pieces that I made in Midjourney. I tried different variations of this prompt, but the image above stood out the most. I wouldn't mind hanging this up on my wall.
/imagine abstract art painting of a poetic collision of vibrant brushstrokes and enigmatic contours, where ethereal whispers of emotion emerge from a tapestry of color, revealing the intangible essence of the soul --ar 16:9 --v 5
The thing I love most about abstract art is that I can spend hours looking at it. It's so therapeutic to me. This piece especially is something that's worth observing for a long time.
/imagine a melodic fusion of vibrant echoes and ethereal strokes, where rhythmic melodies intertwine with kaleidoscopic visions, transcending the boundaries of perception, abstract art, digital art --ar 16:9 --v 5
This piece has a cosmic beauty to it. I feel like I'm looking at the formation of the universe. It's still unbelievable to me that an AI model can produce art like this.
/imagine abstract art, a torrential storm of shattered fragments and radiant hope, where tumultuous waves of despair crash against resilient shores of resilience, forging a tapestry of resilience and unwavering determination --ar 16:9 --v 5
This is another beautiful example of how a Midjourney prompt for art can produce a breathtaking piece. There is a sense of sadness in this piece of art that is difficult to describe in words.
/imagine an abstract voyage through the labyrinth of emotions, where intricate patterns and mysterious forms intertwine, evoking waves of nostalgia, wonder, and the profound depth of emotions that shape the human journey, abstract art, digital art --ar 16:9 --v 5
I hope that by now you understand what I mean when I say your prompts should be abstract from these five examples. The only way to produce abstract art like this in Midjourney is to write prompts like the ones I shared in this article.
Midjourney Prompts for Digital Art
In this section of the article, I will provide you with prompts that feature a variety of art styles. I'll start with an image that depicts a cyberpunk scene in the glitch art style.
/imagine glitch art, group of humans in a dystopian cyberpunk city have decided to strike back, machines have taken over the world and the only hope is a human rebel resistance, intricate details --ar 16:9 --v 5
Glitch art is one of my favorite art styles to use in Midjourney. This is a quite good piece that was generated as the first image when I entered the prompt. I particularly like the masked figure in the center of the image.
/imagine high fantasy world, mythical creatures roam the Earth, humans have formed a special bond with the mythical creatures, ethereal landscapes, mystical world, insanely detailed --ar 16:9 --v 5
High fantasy worlds have been fascinating to me ever since I watched Lord of the Rings for the first time. I must have watched the trilogy at least 15 times. That's why I often experiment with prompts to create fantasy worlds in Midjourney.
/imagine psychedelic art, alien planet, megalithic temples, multiple suns orbit the planet, strange vegetation, enigmatic, intricate details --ar 16:9 --v 5
Wow! Everything about this piece of art is gorgeous The huge temple, the sky, and the vegetation. It would be absolutely insane if a planet similar to this existed somewhere in the boundless universe.
/imagine synthwave style scene of an electric vehicle race, multiple vehicles racing, high speed race, thrilling scene, pedal to the metal --ar 16:9 --v 5
Now this is a race that I would like to watch. I purposely used the word 'vehicle' in the prompt instead of 'car' because it allowed for more randomization to occur in the image generation. Using a word like 'car' here would increase the probability of traditional car designs being featured in a futuristic scene, which wasn't something I was looking for.
/imagine surrealism, memories getting lost in a whirlpool of cosmic matter, black hole devouring everything that's in its way --ar 16:9 --v 5
This is an incredibly powerful piece of art. I can feel the cosmic energy just by looking at it. I absolutely love how detailed the scene is here.
/imagine art deco style casino in an alternate dimension where animals play games, time of your life, lights shining bright, the place to be --ar 16:9 --v 5
This looks like a scene from an illustrated novel. The casino looks gorgeous. It's easy to make the interior of a building look great in Midjourney if you use the art deco style.
/imagine impressionism, man traveling the world on foot to find the truth, once in a lifetime adventure, lifelong quest, the meaning of life, hopeful for a better future --ar 16:9 --v 5
I didn't want to mention where the man specifically was or include details about the landscape. I wanted to create a piece that would evoke strong emotions, which is why my prompt was written in a specific way. I would say that Midjourney really did a fantastic job here.
/imagine 3D art, utopian society, the whole planet is in harmony, everybody is happy, colorful, insanely detailed, polished, Unreal Engine 5 --ar 16:9 --v 5
This is what I imagine the world would look like if we kept advancing our technology but also found a way to reconnect with nature in a big way.
/imagine 3D art, full HD, happy anthropomorphic animals in the forest having a picnic, big smiles, enjoying a hot summer day, friends and family, a moment to remember, Unreal Engine 5, rendered --ar 16:9 --v 5
This is an image that took a lot of tweaks to create. I had to make small changes and adjustments to the prompt to make it look good. It took me more than 15 tries before I got a result that seemed worthy of posting in this article.
/imagine nouveau style art depicting a scene from an ancient text, mystical, otherworldly, ethereal, intricate details, an old tale, powerful scene that evokes emotion --ar 16:9 --v 5
This is one of the most interesting results I got in Midjourney. The level of detail in this image is stunning.
/imagine high fantasy scene, group of young adventurers embarking on an unforgettable journey through an ethereal forest at night, light green light is being emitted throughout the forest, inspiring, awe, breathtaking --ar 16:9 --v 5
This is a rare occasion where Midjourney produced a scene that was exactly like the one I pictured in my head. This is what I imagined embarking on an unforgettable journey looks like.
/imagine an army of ancient undead warriors is gathering, they have rusty armor and swords but they're prepared to take over the world, the army is gathered around a red light that's shining extremely bright, scary, mystical --ar 16:9 --v 5
I didn't mention any specific art style in this prompt because I wanted to see what Midjourney would generate. My idea was to introduce an art style if I wasn't happy with the result. But I was really happy with this illustration as soon as I saw it.
/imagine fractalism, life in a world of deja vu, everything that's already happened will happen again, there is no original idea, life just keeps on repeating, all formed memories already exist --ar 16:9 --v 5
This is another abstract prompt, but I figured it would fit more in this section of the article. It's really interesting what type of art you can produce in Midjourney if you just let your creativity flow.
/imagine atompunk style art, alternate universe, computers are the size of buildings, tall skyscrapers are computers, humans have began to work for giant computers that want all of the resources on the planet, dystopia --ar 16:9 --v 5
This is the world that I wouldn't love to live in. The prompt was loosely inspired by the plot of the Fallout video game series.
/imagine watercolor art, peaceful morning in Iceland, the Sun's rays are slowly melting the ice, wild horses in the distance, spring is starting, nature is beautiful --ar 16:9 --v 5
I really didn't want to end the article with a prompt that depicts a dystopian world. That's why I decided to place this calming watercolor painting as the final image in my article on Midjourney prompts for art.
Final Thoughts
Before Midjourney got released and became popular, I never thought that I was going to be making digital art in my life. I've grown to love doing it. In fact, it's become one of my favorite activities that I do in my spare time.
I see a lot of hate directed toward AI artists online. Some say that they aren't real artists. But you shouldn't take those words seriously.
I would say that if you express your creativity in any way, you are an artist. While text-to-image models like Midjourney have made it insanely easy to generate images, it's still not easy to generate digital art that really stands out.
