It takes time to absorb and process the emotions that are evoked when you're looking at abstract art. Many people have a difficult time understanding abstract art in general.
Abstract art refers to art that doesn't represent external reality. Instead, it uses various shapes, textures, and colors to present an idea. To truly understand it, you'll need an open mind and a lot of imagination.
Midjourney is a text-to-image AI tool that can generate outstanding abstract art images. However, to get these great results, you will need to learn how to properly write Midjourney prompts for abstract art.
If you read some of the other Midjourney articles on this website, you've likely already seen examples of abstract art made with this AI tool. You can find some great examples in my article about Midjourney prompts for digital art.
In today's article, I'm going to teach you a great method for producing abstract art in Midjourney. I'll also share some prompt examples you can use as inspiration.
How to Write Midjourney Prompts for Abstract Art
There are multiple ways to create quality abstract art in Midjourney, but I'll focus on a particular method that I prefer. I believe that the text in your prompt should be abstract to a certain degree to get truly great results.
Instead of instructing Midjourney by describing objects you want to be featured in an image, try to describe a feeling, thought, or idea without necessarily mentioning shapes, textures, or colors. You can also combine radically different ideas and feelings to create something thought-provoking.
In other words, you shouldn't describe external reality in an abstract art prompt.
When I'm creating abstract art in Midjourney, I like to set the aspect ratio to 16:9 since I feel like it helps bring more detail to the image. You're free to choose whatever aspect ratio you want, but most of the prompt examples in this article will feature a 16:9 layout.
Now that I've provided you with a brief description of my method for writing Midjourney prompts for abstract art, it's time to put it to the test.
12 Midjourney Prompts for Abstract Art
Sometimes, it's extremely easy to come up with great prompts for abstract art. Then there are also times when it's extremely difficult. To write these types of prompts, I need to be particularly inspired. Thankfully, I could easily tap into my imagination when I was writing this article to produce 12 examples.
I've selected some of my favorite prompts to help you learn how to create quality abstract art in Midjourney.
/imagine abstract art, diverse emotions are converging for the very first time to create a captivating symphony where joy, sorrow, and everything in between blends together to create the sound of the universe --ar 16:9 --v 5.2
I like to specify at the very beginning of the prompt that I want the AI model to generate abstract art. It's important to make these types of clarifications when you're creating art in Midjourney, as it provides additional context to the model.
/imagine abstract art, breaking the confines of form and structure, expressing emotions in abstract patterns and shapes --ar 16:9 --v 5.2
Just like the previous prompt, I wrote this one to showcase another perspective on how you can visually interpret emotions. When I selected which images I was going to include in this article, I only chose those that evoked some type of emotion.
/imagine abstract art, a small glimpse into the forbidden dimensions which humans can't comprehend, exploring the unseen --weird 750 --ar 16:9 --v 5.2
I'm really proud of this prompt. It's important to think outside of the box when you're writing prompts for abstract art. Since I wanted an image of something humans can't comprehend, I decided this was the perfect spot to include the weird parameter and set its value to 750. Remember, the maximum value for the weird parameter is 3000 while the default is zero.
/imagine abstract art, the essence of eternity, time will continue to pass forever, there is no end --weird 1000 --ar 16:9 --v 5.2
I've always been fascinated by the questions we can't answer. We have certain theories that have a probability of being correct, but we truly don't know whether the universe is infinite and whether it has always existed.
/imagine abstract art, all life comes from the same matter so all life is connected through a very special bond, experiences are shared throughout the expanse --ar 16:9 --v 5.2
The combination of colors in this image is absolutely gorgeous. I could stare at this image the whole day, but that would mean that I'd abandon this article and I don't want to do that. So, it's on to the next prompt!
/imagine abstract art, the biggest strength is found in harmony, achieving a state of bliss requires infinite energy --ar 16:9 --v 5.2
Everybody strives to be happy and to live in harmony with oneself and the world around us. It takes a lot of effort and energy to achieve a state of harmony, which is why I wrote it's where the biggest strength is found.
/imagine abstract art, the beginning stages of the evolution of the cosmos, how matter came into existence --weird 500 --ar 16:9 --v 5.2
This is such an abstract concept that I had to once again include the weird parameter in the prompt. I find that this parameter is particularly useful when you want to create abstract images because it can produce very unexpected results.
It would be extremely difficult to come up with a prompt without the weird parameter that would generate an image like this.
/imagine abstract art, the truth we have been seeking our entire existence is revealed, the revelations are shocking --weird 250 --ar 16:9 --v 5.2
Sometimes, it's best to keep the value of the weird parameter relatively low. Since the default value is 0, increasing the value even a little bit can have a big effect on the generated output.
/imagine abstract art, everything that we see, hear, and touch is an illusion, existence is an illusion --ar 16:9 --v 5.2
While I don't believe that everything we see is an illusion, I know that many people believe this theory. In the end, who knows when or if we'll find answers to this question? Until then, we can only creatively express our thoughts and ideas.
/imagine abstract art, information evolves over time, information is found everywhere and it is constantly evolving --ar 16:9 --v 5.2
The best thing you can do when you're creating abstract art in Midjourney is to find an abstract concept that you can create a prompt for. The results are always surprising, and you can go through countless iterations to find the perfect image.
/imagine abstract art, a deep dive into the enigmatic nature of the human psyche, exploring the depths of the mind through various shapes and patterns --weird 500 --ar 16:9 --v 5.2
I've always been fascinated by the human mind. It's so complex that one has to wonder how it's possible that we've achieved this level of intelligence. We won't even know how common or rare our intellect is until we discover intelligent life forms on other planets, which isn't even guaranteed to happen.
/imagine abstract art, the elements that make up the universe can be manipulated to bend the very fabric of reality, divine knowledge --ar 16:9 --v 5.2
This is a very interesting image. It's completely different than any other that was created using this prompt, hence why I chose to use it.
Final Thoughts
In this article, you've learned how to write Midjourney prompts for abstract art by using a very simple method. I hope some of the prompts and images I've shared today inspire you to create some beautiful art today.
Let's recap some of the main points:
- Abstract art doesn't represent external reality and instead uses shapes, colors, and textures to present an idea.
- One of the best methods to create a great piece of abstract art is to write the prompt in an abstract way.
- You don't have to mention any objects, shapes, colors, or textures in your prompts to generate quality art.
- Experiment with the weird parameter as it can really make a difference, especially when you're generating abstract art.
Before I sign off, I would like to offer one additional piece of advice. If you want to increase the quality of your AI-generated images, I suggest that you use an upscaling tool like Upscayl. It's the best way to ensure your work looks more professional.
In case you're not familiar with Upscayl, it's a free and open-source software that increases the resolution of AI-generated images in seconds. I like to use this tool in general, but it really comes in handy with abstract art.
