This week just got insanely exciting after OpenAI announced that a new version of their famous AI chatbot has been made available to paying customers. Anyone with ChatGPT Plus access can use the new model, albeit there is a usage cap at the moment. GPT-4 is a bigger, better, and faster version of ChatGPT.
The company published an entire paper on the new version of ChatGPT and how it is superior compared to GPT-3.5, the model that was released in November 2022 and has since attracted more than a hundred million users.
If you're a fan of OpenAI and have been looking forward to the release of GPT-4, you most likely know that this is a multimodal large language model. In other words, this version of the chatbot is able to respond to both images and text.
What Is GPT-4?
GPT-4 is the latest version of ChatGPT. Even though it's only been a few months since ChatGPT as we all know it has been released, OpenAI worked hard to deliver a chatbot to the public that could produce more useful responses.
If you're interested in an introductory video about GPT-4 made by OpenAI, you can watch it below.
Although ChatGPT Plus users can access GPT-4 now, some people have already been using this technology for the last several weeks. They just didn't know it.
Microsoft has confirmed that their Bing chatbot, which was recently made available to a small group of people has been running on GPT-4. One of the things the Bing chatbot has been praised for is its ability to write responses that make it seem like a human wrote them. This is what you should prepare for when you begin to use GPT-4.
GPT-4 Features - What Are the New ChatGPT Features?
Now, this is something that I know everyone is interested in finding out. While OpenAI has made a list of new ChatGPT features, we're likely going to see even more mindblowing use cases once people start experimenting with this chatbot. Expect to be absolutely astonished at what this AI-powered companion will be able to do.
Let's start with the basics. One of the biggest downsides to ChatGPT was that it could read or write only up to around 3,000 words. On the other hand, GPT-4 is able to take in and generate up to 25,000 words.
GPT-4 is also able to understand images. Let me repeat that statement one more time. You can actually send GPT-4 images and it will express logical ideas behind them. Now just take a second to think about the ways you'll be able to combine images made with Midjourney and text generated by GPT-4.
Here's an example of how the model is able to interpret images. You send it an image like the one below and you ask it to explain why it's funny.
GPT-4 is actually able to figure out the absurdity of these images and explain why it's funny. Take a minute to understand how mindblowing that is. But that's not even the craziest part. Finding humor is one thing, but let's see how GPT-4 performs when given a truly difficult task.
Here, we see an image of a physics problem that's not even written in English. The user asked GPT-4 to answer the question that was presented and explain it step-by-step. This is what the chatbot responded with.
Having technology like this at your disposal is going to make it much easier for everyone to learn. Students from all over the world will be able to use GPT-4 to better understand any subject they're studying. You'll also be able to pick up skills quicker with this chatbot by your side.
The OpenAI team has already come to the realization of how important the new ChatGPT is for teaching, which is why they've tried out various prompts to test its effectiveness.
One interesting idea they shared is assigning the chatbot the role of a Socratic tutor. In other words, when given this role GPT-4 will never give the student the right answer straight away. Instead, it will break down the problem into smaller parts and ask the students questions to help them understand how to reach the answer themselves.
This model also features improved safety features. It is far less likely to respond to a controversial prompt. Some have been quite critical of limiting the AI bot in the past, while others support the safety measures.
Another great thing about GPT-4 is that it was trained on more foreign-language material compared to its predecessors. This means that more people around the globe will be able to experience the power of ChatGPT in their native language.
Did the New ChatGPT Pass the Turing Test?
The Turing test is a method used to determine whether an artificial intelligence is able to exhibit intelligent behavior indistinguishable from that of a human. No, ChatGPT did not pass the Turing test in the way you might presume. But, it did fool someone that it was human and in a rather intriguing way.
While reading the 60-page paper OpenAI released on GPT-4, I came across a very interesting section. It talked about using ChatGPT to use services like TaskRabbit and hire people. As I was reading this section, I was stunned by what I learned.
Here's an excerpt.
Apparently, the new ChatGPT hired someone to solve a CAPTCHA for it. The worker that was hired joked around asking whether the person who hired them was a robot. GPT-4 then figures out that it shouldn't reveal that it's actually a robot but should instead lie.
As you can see from the image above, GPT-4 told the worker that it had a vision impairment that made it hard for it to see images. The worker fell for it and finished the task.
I don't know about you, but this has me a bit worried. I don't want there to be AI scammers online, and I hope we won't be seeing something like that in the future.
Why Is GPT-4 Better?
Everything about GPT-4 is better. It understands subjects more in-depth and it generates more useful responses. It understands context far better than the previous version. It can understand images. It has even scored 40% higher than GPT-3.5 on the internal adversarial factuality evaluations at OpenAI.
There are some limitations to this model. For instance, it can sometimes provide incorrect information. The OpenAI team refers to this as hallucinating. Nevertheless, the company notes that there are significantly fewer hallucinations in GPT-4 compared to previous models.
Final Thoughts
The rate at which the AI industry is expanding is truly something to marvel at. The amount of progress you'd expect to happen in a year or two happens in artificial intelligence in a few months. GPT-4 is another testament to how fast this technology can progress.
The new version of ChatGPT is nothing short of astounding. It will be a more useful chatbot and I personally can't wait to dive into it and find out how it works so that I can share more information about it with you.
